Castroville is located approximately 15 miles west of San Antonio. Although the city of Castroville is considered middle income, the surrounding area includes many economically disadvantaged families. Nearly 50% of the students in the Medina Valley lSD, the local school district, claim free or reduced lunch. As a result, most of the animals owned by these families are never spayed or neutered and are often allowed to roam with little resistance. Because of this, the animals are allowed to proliferate freely. We estimate that about 24,000 dogs and cats live in our area.

Like many areas, Castroville and its surrounding areas are dealing with a major animal overpopulation problem. Because it is rural, it is a popular "dumping ground" for unwanted animals. The City of Castroville operates a 72-hour holding facility for stray animals. However, after that period the animal must be claimed or euthanized. Over 500 animals were euthanized last year.

Castroville Nip and Tuck was incorporated on November 29, 2005. Our original mission was to provide low cost spay and neuter services to citizens living in the 78009 zip code area. Because we started out with limited funds, our organization has limited its outreach to spay and neuter vouchers that can be taken to local veterinarians who have generously agreed to participate in the program. Pet owners eligible to receive vouchers must be on low or fixed incomes and be able to prove they have rescued or adopted the cat or dog needing the service.

Qualifications for a spay or neuter voucher:

Because of limited funding, our organization has limited its outreach to spay and neuter vouchers that can be taken to local veterinarians who have generously agreed to participate in the program. To be eligible for the Voucher Program, you must be low income (single head of household, $25,000 or less and two income household, $35,000 or less) or be receiving one of the following needs-based public assistance programs in Texas: Food Stamps, Major VA Disability, Medicaid, Public School Free Lunch Program, Section 8 Housing, Social Security Disability (SSD), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

And you must be able to show evidence (paperwork, witness), that the cat or dog has been adopted or rescued.

To apply for a voucher, applicants must bring a photo ID, proof of participation in one of the public assistance programs, or proof of income, and evidence indicating the cat or dog has been adopted or rescued.

We are very grateful to the veterinarians who have generously volunteered their services to help with the Nip and Tuck program. We could not do it without their help. Visit our "Veterinarians" page to learn more about them and to find contact information.

Visit our "Events" page to learn about the activities sponsored by Nip and Tuck in order to raise money for the low cost spay and neuter vouchers we offer.

Our "Getting a Pet" and "Caring for a Pet" pages have useful information and links to websites and web pages that offer expert advice for those who are thinking of getting a pet and for those who have a pet and are looking for information on how to give it the best care and training.

We have an "Adopt Us" page for animals that need to be adopted. If you have lost a pet, visit this page to see pictures of the dogs and cats that have been listed as needing a home and call our Animal Control Officer Billy Torres at 830-931-2222 to see if he has seen your pet. On our "Links" page you will find contact numbers for animal control officers in Medina and Bandera counties.

If you want to adopt an animal consider one of these dogs and cats that need homes and someone to love them and care for them. You will also find contact numbers for other local shelters on our "Links" page.

Castroville Nip and Tuck is supervised by a Board of Directors. In the photo they are celebrating a grant they received last year from the San Antonio Area Foundation Aid to Helpless Animals Trust (http://www.saafdn.org).

They plan on applying for more grants so that they may help more people take responsible care of their animals and try to minimize the number of unwanted and abandoned animals that are left to suffer.

Nip and Tuck can be reached at 830-931-2525.

In the photo, board members are (1-r), Peggy Schriner, Kyle McVay, Virginia Keefer, Dr. Deborah Queen holding Blanca, and Kathleen Bachus.
